The following are my own tips on how best to get to know Jesus better; many duplicate John's tips, others I have included myself. I include these here partly as encouragement to myself, as well as in providing them for you.
Pray. Prayer is the most powerful tool in the world, never doubt its effectiveness, and never give up hope. We may not always see the results of our prayers but know that the Lord has heard them.
Remember each and every person has the right to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ; yourself included. Don’t ever hinder that; directly or indirectly.
Read scripture daily. Take time to meditate on the word of God. The more we know scripture, the more we will know God.
Attend mass regularly; daily if possible. Remember that after Jesus blessed and broke the bread, He gave us a clear commandment to “do this in remembrance of me”. It isn’t an optional extra.
Spend time in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Jesus truly is present in these moments; let His peace and presence be with you.
Be honest and open. You may be able to fool others, you might even fool yourself, but you can’t fool God. If you find it hard being honest, pray to Jesus and ask Him for help in that area of your life.
Go to confession regularly. No matter how you feel about it beforehand, afterwards your mind will be at peace. ‘He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.’ (Prov 28:13). Don’t doubt the extent of God’s mercy.
Embrace community life. We are all part of the one body of Christ, without our participation and engagement that body will find it hard to operate. Don’t doubt the value of the contribution you can make. In all you do, use your gifts to build up the Church; especially in those communities and countries in need.
Think spiritually. Jesus turned water into wine, He walked on water and He fed five thousand people from five loaves of bread and two fish. The world we live in is not all it appears to be. Ask for anything in Jesus’s name, and He will do it.
Give charitably. Remember that whilst it is good to give our money, time and talents to charitable causes, these pale in comparison to the gift of giving away our pride. What doesn’t humble, hinders.
Whatever suffering you are going through remember that others are going through it too, or have been through it already. Know ‘that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.’ (Rom 5:3-4).
Talk your faith and let the name of Jesus Christ be always on your lips. However, don’t talk about Jesus to somebody, until first you’ve talked to Jesus about them.
Contribute to Soul Food Cinema and other forms of media; provide encouragement, feedback and constructive criticism. Pray for those in the media and those who exert control over it.
Learn to listen to God. There will always be a next step for you to take in life. Be patient and have confidence in the knowledge that stepping forwards will always take you closer to a more peaceful place.
Be prepared to place your trust in others.
Pray with others; Jesus told us ‘where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.’ (Matt 18: 20).
Recognise your complete dependence upon the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit to do anything of any good in this world. Pray frequently throughout the day. Don’t give priority to planning, over praying.
Pray the Rosary regularly, intersperse decades throughout the day if necessary. The Rosary is a very powerful prayer and is an excellent way to further our relationship with our mother in heaven; Our Lady, Blessed Mary.
Remember that you did not choose God; it was He that chose you. Before you were even in your mother’s womb He chose you. His unconditional love for you was, is, and will always be.
