Synopsis

Homer Smith, an itinerant handyman, is driving through the Arizona desert when he meets five impoverished nuns. Stopping to fix their leaky farmhouse roof, Homer discovers that not only will the Mother Superior not pay him for the job, but she also wants him to build their chapel - for free! Hesitant at first, Homer soon finds himself single-handedly raising the chapel and the financing. But although he will not receive monetary reward, Homer knows that when his work is done, he'll leave that dusty desert town a much better place than when he found it.

  Silver Screen Soul
  Mark Banks (United Kingdom)
  Opinion: Recommended
There are few films that adhere to a Charismatic or Pentecostal way of living the faith, but Lilies of the Field is one of them. Similar somewhat to The Bell's of St Mary's the plot hinges around the charity of a benefactor in order to finance and construct a building for the use of the church. Sidney Poitier turns in a trademark performance full of character, wit and soul as Homer Smith. Homer's bantering with Mother Maria brings more than a few laughs as the two test and challenge one another to breaking point. Lilies of the Field is recommended viewing for all of the family as well as any Hollywood producer looking for inspiration to re-produce some true silver screen soul.
