Synopsis

A classic Disney animated fairy tale meets with the modern, live-action romantic comedy in Walt Disney Pictures' Enchanted. Featuring an all-star cast, Enchanted follows the beautiful princess Giselle (Amy Adams) as she is banished by an evil queen (Susan Sarandon) from her magical, musical animated land and finds herself in the gritty reality of the streets of modern-day Manhattan. Shocked by this strange new environment that doesn't operate on a "happily ever after" basis, Giselle is now adrift in a chaotic world badly in need of enchantment. But when Giselle begins to fall in love with a charmingly flawed divorce lawyer (Patrick Dempsey) who has come to her aid, even though she is already promised to a perfect fairy tale prince (James Marsden) back home, she has to wonder: can a storybook view of romance survive in the real world?

  A Great Modern-day Fairytale

  Opinion: Recommended
Though most of Hollywood's output for teens-upwards is little to write home about at the moment, I'm glad to say that for the market that sits in just below that, there's a good amount of material coming through from Pixar, and in this case Disney, to give good cause for a smile and sigh of relief. Enchanted throws the traditional fairytale story on its head with Giselle, Edward and co. being thrown out of their perfect animated world into the harsh realities of New York city. Though through her journeying in New York with Robert (Patrick Demsey) and his daughter, Giselle soon discovers that human nature remains the same whichever world one lives in, opening up Patrick's eyes along the way too. There's a strong testament to marriage throughout the film; with Giselle questioning why it takes people so long to fall in love and get married, as well as patching up the broken marriage of two of Robert's clients in an instant. Susan Sarandon is fantastic as the Queen Narissa - an evil stepmother if ever there was one. The central theme song 'That's How You Know' is also a catchy number sure to have the young ones tugging at the purse strings to purchase the DVD - the one possible downside of seeing this enjoyable film.
