Synopsis

Not since G.W. Pabst's 1956 effort, 'Letste Akt' (The Last Act) has a German film attempted to tackle the subject of their most famous leader, Adolf Hitler. Breaking a long-standing taboo, the director, Oliver Hirschbiegel, has made a film that has sparked much debate in Germany and the rest of the world. Downfall features an astonishing performance by Bruno Ganz as history's most notorious figure. Providing an unprecedented and controversial insider's perspective, the film is a gripping insight into the madness and desperation of Hitler in the final hours of the war as the Russian Army closes a ring around Berlin. Beautifully photographed and brilliantly acted, this tour de force is at once dramatic, harrowing and remarkably authentic. The basis for the screenplay by writer-producer Bernd Eichinger came from two key sources: Joachim Fest's book "Inside Hitler's Bunker: The Last Days of The Third Reich", the recognition that the horrifying epic of Hitler and his people during his twelve years in power was reflected in those last twelve days in the bunker; and the memoirs of Hitler's private secretary, Traudl Junge, in Melissa Mueller's book, "Until The Final Hour: Hitler's Last Secretary", which provided an invaluable insight into the character of the man, and those final, fatal few days of the war.

A Biblically Foretold Descent into Madness
  Mark Banks (United Kingdom)
  Opinion: Recommended
One of the things I take issue with in today's comic-book and computer-game culture is that evil villains have all too easily become to be thought of as only existing in the fictional realm. And if there's one thing that Der Untergang does it is that it goes a long way to laying that fallacy to rest. Many non-Christians also find it hard to understand why Christians continue to believe in Jesus and the Bible in this age of 'enlightenment'. Well one good reason is because the things the Bible tells us will happen; do happen. And with reference to Hitler there can be few more applicable verses than those found in Deuteronomy 28:15-28: "However, if you do not obey the LORD your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come upon you and overtake you: You will be cursed in the city and cursed in the country… The LORD will send on you curses, confusion and rebuke in everything you put your hand to, until you are destroyed and come to sudden ruin because of the evil you have done in forsaking him… The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies. You will come at them from one direction but flee from them in seven, and you will become a thing of horror to all the kingdoms on earth… The LORD will afflict you with madness, blindness and confusion of mind". These become ever more applicable when one thinks of the confusion in Hitler's mind when he decided to invade Russia, and also the blindness he was afflicted with in his youth.
